According to a large sign posted on University Ave, the improvements of the bus stops along the 51B line — the busiest line in Berkeley — at Acton and Bonar will begin construction tomorrow. This will shorten crosswalk distances and remove a little aspirationally metered but never used curb parking.
I feel like this is going to cause immediate jealousy for those of us living east of Acton, where the much busier stops at MLK and Shattuck lack such luxuries. @igortregub.bsky.social when we do get them?

The scheduled improvements you see on University Avenue at Acton Street and Bonar Street are from the 2020 Pedestrian Plan. Luckily, this plan also includes improvements on intersections on MLK Jr Way from Hearst Avenue to Adeline Street.
MLK Jr Way at University, in particular, will see changes like an all-way pedestrian crossing, restrictions on right turns on red, a median refuge, consolidating driveways, a hardened center line, curb extensions, and widening the sidewalk at bus stops. Positive change is to come!
My staff will inquire with the Department of Public Works whether there is an expected timeline for the MLK JR Way Improvements to take place.

when your streetview shows the police and tow truck in the crosswalk, you know it is time for some engineering improvements. Hopefully seniors will make it across the reduced distance in one cycle now!
My kids attended the school between Acton and Bonar for 8 years. That median-mounted signal gets wrecked quarterly, at least. I feel like I saw at least a dozen crashes at Acton.
In fact, look at the street view shot just before yours. The signal is missing.
