I don't know why these people couldn't just not listen to the madness and do their job and then get fired. It would raise more red flags than just resigning.

I believe it's simple self preservation. Fear, complacency and desire to maintain status quo. As kids we wanna be doctors or in politics to help and change what's broken. Time shifts all in it's wake. We grow to know a darker reality and being on a ladder of success is a hard climb but a quick drop.
