Indeed people need to take this right more seriously.

The amount of people voting in the US has always been a joke. Many are not even registered to vote (in my country that happens automatically). On that basis alone the US has never really been a democracy.
No, we really haven’t. Originally the constitution & bill of rights applied to only white landowners. That changed with the 14th amendment after the civil war expanding citizenship. I’m not certain if it was then or earlier when white non landowners could vote
The numbers which I have been able to find suggest that only 70% of the voter population is actually registered to vote. The turnout among those registered was only 63,9% in 2024. Here everyone over the age of 18 is automatically registered and only extremely few is excluded from voting.
One party here wants fewer voters bc their actions are terribly unpopular. The other party wants to protect voting rights. I think voting should be compulsory
I am not especially a fan of compulsory voting, if some people really know nothing, they shouldn’t vote. We also don’t need it. I am a huge fan of people being automatically registered to vote.
Our turnout has for many years been between 84-88%.
That’s a testament to an engaged population
It could be better but it definitely could also be worse 😉.
