I am genuinely shocked Dippin Dots are from the 80s. I had always assumed they were some sort of space age thing like Tang.

Like I assumed they were invented around the time Walt Disney froze his head and they needed more uses for the tech.

I didn't know till now that they were invented in the 80s, but the 80s is in fact when I first remember seeing them, and I'm old enough to have been a child in the 60s (when I do remember Tang existing).

iirc part of the reason for the delay is that it took a while for ULT freezer technology to mature - enough of that had to be in-house that Dippin Dots Cryogenics is now a significant scientific contractor for ULT freezer design

Dipping Dots was invented after the Challenger disaster to help kids get over the Space Age.

There's a fine dining thing called "molecular gastronomy" that loves making little spheres out of foods that should not be spheres, and I always wonder * Were these chefs inspired by Dippin Dots? * Are Dippin Dots molecular gastronomy?

Are you thinking of Astronaut Ice Cream, which kids would bring home from spring break trips to Cape Canaveral every year when I was little?

You can get this at REI now but it was a thing in the 70’s and 80’s. Just harder to find. Freeze dried ice cream.

Maybe that was the power of marketing it as “the ice cream of the future.”

I'm nitpicking here but I feel like their having been created in 1988 makes them both technically from the '80s and in a practical sense not.

A 90s product is even less space age. They were a new product when I remember them from and not some boomer shit like I had asked back then.

Me: "They're an Internet Age invention." My brain: ["Actually the internet was created in the '60s by the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency."]
