I believe in science but another thing I believe is when I tell my dog every day that he's my best friend he understands me because somehow the sentiment is translated into the universal language of Vibes and permeates through to his little brain

Sort of related: cats meow because they're doing their best impression of a human voice, and the smarter your cat is, the earlier they were socialized as a companion animal, the more likely the meows will be especially articulate or varied. My tabby-Siamese actually chains meows together.

See, a fun thing I like to do with stuff like this is deconstruct it until I reach the simplest, most utilitarian explanation for something. "Why do mammals have empathy?" Because it's the mechanism by which to get mammals, who are endothermic and spend a lot of calories on HVAC, to use less ...

One Who Walks Among the Dead @anubisthejackal.bsky.social

... energy, to waste fewer precious calories, by encouraging them to "cuddle" and cohabitate. In other words, empathy is the mechanism that suppresses the "hey wait you aren't me, and that makes you bad" survival instinct.

I mean. This is kinda the reality though. Between pheremones and mirror neurons and acculturation of tone; dogs *do* understand that we love them. And they do love us in return. Same for cats.

I just tell my dog that he’s a very good boy. He always understands that. No translation necessary.

I'm a dog trainer, and the best master-level trainer I know of firmly believes in telling your dog things like this, what to expect, etc. Your voice and body language will become congruent with your intention, and they really will be able to read some of your emotion/intention.

According to the guy I met at the dumpster behind Taco Bell dogs gave us the gift of language by sacrificing their own. Beholden to the language, but never able to speak it again. His evidence? You ask any dog "whosa good boi" and they all react the same.

Dogs read human faces better than humans in some ways. I saw an article about a recent research paper not long ago. I'll try to dig up a reference if you want to read it. 🧪 Science, so far, seems to agree with your intuition.

Dogs can't see well, so that's doubtful. They have only 2 color cones, compared to humans' 3. Also, as they age, their vision gets worse. Instead, dogs can interpret a lot from smell and sound. They can hear the very specific frequencies in your voice associated with "baby talk" or affirmations.

Additionally, they can probably smell oxytocin from your skin. I've read numerous stories of dogs smelling everything from heart attacks to diabetes to cancer to seizures. So the idea they can't smell certain hormones or pheromones seems ... unlikely.

...you don't know how right you might be. Social animals are both acutely aware of mood indicators and have room for social programming to pick up and learn social ceremony. It may sound like "bark barking bark" in his little brain but it means "sibling by another litter."
