The mental health benefits of not knowing any history right now must be massive. Moving through your day with total equanimity. What happens next? Who knows? Maybe something good

Hey, as long as it doesn't affect you personally, why worry? /s, in case it's not obvious
i think i'm safe. i've made some pretty cutting edge risqué jazz themed cabaret shows. people will always need that.
Learn to read, they said. Reading is fundamental, they said.
Thank you! 🤣
Knowing a lot helps. I've noticed some important distinctions with this crop... and the big one is that they're fixated on the _trappings_ of power and wealth. Not on actual power or wealth. They want the gold leaf and parades... not the boring bits that make them trivial to have.
The fascists keep saying that they like the good things and their enemies only like the bad things, so it must be true, right?
If wishes were horses...
Recently had to introduce my 27yo coworker to the holocaust *commences binge drinking*
Second only to Those who do not read the news, and are generally clueless as to what is going on right now
I remember having a talk with my grandma years ago, she lived in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the whole event was a "whatever" to her because she lived on the opposite end of Oahu during that time. no matter the period, there are people just indifferent to historical moments
Like outside of the sirens, she was legitimately unaffected by WWII. She's in the minority, but some people somehow coast by major history being made
Amazing.
That's an impressive level of chill and I'm here for it
meemaw got that psychopath gene
More like too young to understand at the time, but not entirely wrong as a grandmother lol
Like walking thru the woods in a suburban area while knowing nothing about invasive plant species. Pure childlike wonder and naïveté
ha!
I covet their idiocy.
Basically, we never have had an authoritarian government in the history of the United States of America. Let’s hope his cult members will stop their blind faith in him🤷🏼♀️ We’re all winging it
Well it’s a terrible time for those of us who studied government and history so yeah
I forgot what I said that prompted it but my SIL replied “yea, no I don’t live a very existential existence.” & I was like “Wow must be nice.” They think I’m lording over them when it’s like mother fucker I’m just trying to understand stuff, how can you NOT??
Right?? How on earth are they able to look away? I certainly can't.
"a very existential existence"??? jesus wept
can you imagine how blissful it must be to just not know...anything? just peaceful. like a goldfish. amazing.
Eat, swim, shit, sounds like a good life.
I sustain untold amounts of psychic damage just by waking up every day
Spain had Franco but now they've got universal healthcare and topless beaches so maybe this timeline ends well. Not quite sure what happened in the middle part, though.
same thought. it's a mental disorder of "superiority."
Have a good feeling someone is about to bring me a delicious sandwich.
Try knowing some history AND having imbibed too much dystopian science fiction as a youngster... 😬
I’m midway through One Second After 😬🫣 Do *not* recommend military dystopian (non?)fiction at this point in history.😣
Blackout by Marc Elsberg is a good example of the "what happens afterwards..." genre.
Oooooo thank you for the recommendation! Adding it to the list.✔️ I should be reading fun beachy romance fluff for my sanity…😝😂 But I know I’m going to read the dystopian stuff anyway…😜 😬🫣😳
And getting the correct messages from dystopian fiction, instead of "hmm, that Zorg bloke is kinda cool", or "that Colossus project is a *great* idea!"
Forget flying cars; I wanted Star Trek's Federation or Banks's Culture in my future.
Instead, we have a mash-up of Running Man, Max Headroom, Colossus, and Idiocracy. As for flying cars, Commander Sisko was ranting about the lack of them 25 years ago. https://youtu.be/vzm6pvHPSGo
I think this post wins the Internet today. This insight is spot on and hits a nerve.
Thinking of that lady who "fell in love with her psychiatrist" and had chatgpt call her "the oracle"
Henry you bastard
My body is in knots, I seriously wish I never paid attention to history lessons. Then I could live out my final days in ignorant bliss. Instead I get to agonize over the best course of defense while people around me downplay the severity of what’s unfolding. We warned a holocaust was coming.
Maybe something good 😂😂😂
My sis is just full head in the sand except for "inflation" (tariffs), which are hitting her personally
*me scrolling through hundreds of memes that all say “nothing ever happens”* Cmon baby cmon daddy needs a new pair of shoes
@fallofcivilizations.com
I work in administrative law and assumed it would lead to a life of blissful concern with minutiae and incremental change. Now it feels like I'm watching a person slowly die of cancer from the inside
We'll just vote them out!
Oh no... I've been actively consuming a lot of history books. Am I going to have a mental breakdown?
Alduos Huxley said: “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach”. So it probably doesn’t matter how much history one knows anyway. We seem destined to keep repeating the same old selfish mistakes. Pass the mescaline!
Really regretting that History Major.
Other weird kids had fun special interests like dinosaurs or finger painting. I had history. Explains a lot of why I kinda suck lol. It's great that I'm knowledgeable enough to know we're facing a really dumb Mussolini but I'm not charismatic enough to stop it. Good stuff.
Me too!
I empathise. My degree in political science, my addiction to current & past domestic & international affairs, I rather suspect is pushing me into an earlier grave than perhaps nature intended. 😅 ☹️😔
Nature is obviously trying to kill you
😅🤣😂Yes. That's how it works. The "nature" of humankind is that we are born, and then we start to die! 😁 Good Times!
Tbh, sometimes I find that really comforting. This is all temporary anyways. Time will just keep passing and we'll all be forgotten.
Agreed. As an elder, I've made peace with my pending demise. 😊 It's been an interesting little life. With things going south as it were, I'm grateful I am on my way out. ✨️ NEXT ! ( If anything! 😁)
I have said several times the same, I am glad I’m on my way out
Is it weird that I’m jealous 😭 staring down the barrel of x more decades is truly wild for me
🫶I think about this and despair to some degree for my younger loved ones. The way for so many ' round the world will be challenging. The human spirit is resilient, & I have faith that you & they will find a course correction that will change everything for the better! 🙌🖖Onwards, with courage!
I appreciate you!
I got a masters and took a course on Nazi Germany out of curiosity while doing it. At least I have been somewhat less surprised than everyone else, I guess?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Kinda like a game of bingo. Or check the grocery list.
The world is made for those not cursed with self-awareness. Or something like that.
there's never been a war that involved the whole world so this probably isn't my problem
Well, Antarctica, I guess… youtube.com/watch?v=qa0D...
Have you heard of sarcasm?
Have you heard how many people don’t realize it WAS a total world war? Do you know how many people believe WWII ended with “negotiations?” Hitler killed himself & his body was burned, Mussolini was hanged upside down at an Esso station, and 2 nukes were dropped on Tojo. THOSE were negotiations! 😉
Technically correct is the best kind of correct.
The Kaiser had plans to send a gunboat to Point Nemo but they couldn't be bothered. It really showed that no one took the whole thing seriously.
I envy the folks who spend hours watching episodes of The Office on repeat instead of paying any attention to the news.
If only FOMO was like kryptonite. .
No kidding. Still getting lots of “we’ve been here before, I’m an optimist”. Right, and you have undertaken those same steps taken to get out of our last authoritarian regime and occupation of pur streets? No, because the steps are gone, the rules don’t apply, and by the way, who is “we”?
Just pretend your not getting kicked in the ass
American Exceptionalism by Ignorance
*lolsob*
🤣🤯😭🤮🤣😂🤪😣
Ignorance is indeed bliss
Ignorance is bliss ~ Ahhh… to be smooth brained
The checks and balances i learned about in social studies should kick in any day now :)
Yeah but remember Hitler lost the war. This is looking more like Leopold II of Belgium, except with all of humanity in the position of the Congo Free State. And maybe even that is optimistic.
Many modern Americans have the delusion that their existence would likely be improved if their identity and circumstances were reset, and a new one randomly generated from the total pool of human experience. This is not correct! It can and will get worse, that's the most likely outcome!
Those of us w PTSD, on the other hand, being awake is a living nightmare. One story my mother told me about growing up in Nazi Germany was if you buy a rabbit on the black market make sure the paws are attached. Cats look the same skinned. I have scarier thoughts, I know too much history to relax.
What I wouldn’t give to be stupid right now. I’ve even tried to talk myself into being stupid.
Bring back lobotomies
Make lobotomies great again
ECT has definitely started to regain popularity
Make Brainworm get one, keep up the family tradition.
If memory serves me they’re talking about bringing back insane asylums and sending depressed, autistic, adhd, and others there. So let’s not pick up the ice picks again.
Pretty sure they already started the lists.
It hasn't been this bad since the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.
🤣
Ignorance is bliss.
Sometimes I wish I could be like a family member who intentionally stays away from any news. The big issue is when he gets slapped upside the skull with reality, he'll be looking to me for help.
thankfully we have Negotiation to look forward to and everything will be fine
It's probably a bad time for me to be reading "The Coming of the Third Reich."
Oh I can’t imagine something that happened so long ago in another country could have any relevance for us today 😬
It's all in my imagination, right?
This reads like a failed encyclopedia check in Disco Elysium
I'm with you! Can any of these MAGA Neanderthals READ????
"Ignorance is bliss"
The other day people were talking about something called 'Cracker Barrel" but I don't know what that is, and this time I decided I didn't actually need to know either. I doubt it would have made me happier. I should do this "not bothering to find stuff out" more often.
I was SO proud of myself for NOT learning what all the fuss was over Cracker Barrel. I ignored something! 🏆 I learned my lesson from looking into what a “Sydney Sweeney” is. 🙄😣
I am gradually becoming more adept at that!
Do feel that being an incurious moron must have all kinds of benefits in a situation like this, and might actually be the smart move.
Blissful
I would love a Good Historical Thing to happen
But if circumstances blows up and affects them ...theu have none of histories great lessons to lean on, transforming blissful ignorance into mental health nightmare
No need for history, the fascists are working with their playbook open and on display. At every turn they have made their intentions fairly clear. People need to be deliberately obtuse to not know what comes next when Trump and his cult are literally announcing it.
I just read an entire book about the start of the Civil War and I’m not sure why I thought that would be a good idea.
Those who don’t read history are doomed to enjoy 10 pm bedtimes and excellent sleep.
man if that like, ya know normal human sleep schedule, if that worked on me instead of leaving me feeling like something that lives at the bottom of a well I'd probably have an easier time with employment
Those who read history are doomed to watch those who don't read history repeat it
Probably something good I'm sure
Chuckle.
Sort of like the residents of Pompeii. Citizen 1- Hey did you feel that rumble? Citizen 2- It's nothing. I lit an offering last night, we're good.
I have some friends like this and they think I’m only bringing unnecessary stress to myself by paying attention to what’s going on.
Trains gonna run on time I guess
The downside to reading history. 🙁
Ignorance is bliss?
"Oh I just haven't been paying attention to the news" people have honed a dark magic that must be serving them well right now
I absolutely adore it when my honey tells me somethin' good!
- God created everything. - Adam and Eve wore co-ed naked shirts to hide themselves. - George Washington created America. - Jesus created the NFL. End of history lesson. Thank you for subscribing to PragerU.
I've been paying attention since I was 5 years old. I didn't really have a childhood. My adulthood has been one disappointment after another with politics and government. Now, in my "old age" (55+) I'm finally finding healthy ways to cope. Being "woke" definitely takes its toll.
Ignorance is blissful until "Little Boy" and "Fat Man", packed full of enriched uranium and plutonium respectively are dropped in the middle of your neighbourhood a la Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Know your history. Pick up a book. Or not. Carry on then.
Yeah... I'm sad
Tweet of the year 🥹
I regret knowing anything right now. I wish I were a deer in the forest.
...sadly hunting season is just around the corner
Positively Panglossian.
Indeed!
it's just a gag. just a goof. they'll send the troops home and anounce the nation's been punk'd
Everybody worrying about the wrong Kennedy
Whole bunch of philosophical zombies
Those who do not learn history are doomed to equanimity
But as it gets late in the day and the sun starts to set, we must ask: if this continues, will darkness rule? Will the sun be gone forever?
“Ignorance is bliss” seemed like such a goofy, meaningless phrase until I grew up and learned things about the world that I almost wish I hadn’t lol
Well said. I think there is also a very strong belief it could never happen here, combined with mainstream media failing to raise any alarms
This is just "ignorance is bliss" from The Matrix but with more words
Like at some point good news has to hit right?
Also planetary science 350 ppm / 450 ppm / 2 degrees / 4 degrees, wasn’t it hotter last Tuesday? Sounds nice 😌
That group is still holding beefs about Starbucks cups on top of which their recent restaurant logo troubles now sit
My peace of mind is that he has one foot in the grave and will be dead in a matter of months.
Conversely, knowing lots of history makes you laugh manically at random times because you know what's coming and then boom, it happens. Time is a flat circle.
I was also meditating on "ignorance is bliss," and therefore my more "veil of tears" experience of reality the other day...
You can still understand things and not let it affect your mental health You just have to accept the truth compartmentalize 🔍🔍🔍
For real
