Thank you so much for this. I saw the story and was astonished, couldn't see what was going on. It's an appalling use of 'journalism' but I'm sure I'll be hearing about this 'two tier' NHS I the coming days. 🙄

I seen the headline today and without looking any further into it just immediately thought "There is obviously more to this"
Yep. Whenever I see a headline like that, I never bother asking whether it is false. I jump straight to the question how it is false.
Wow. Nicely executed demolition job on the DM story. Shame 99% of those who’ve read it won’t read this thread.
But you can sign up to make btl comments on the Daily Mail and point it out there - which I've done several times. Shouting into the void maybe but every little helps.

Absolute BS
A timely reminder that if a Daily Mail headline seems surprising, it’s because it is utterly misleading
The following Daily Mail headline announces that Tomasi has "broken her silence" about being shot, after she cried out in pain on air when the rubber bullet hit her leg, and then stated that she was OK.
My immediate thought is it’s in the Fail so it’s obviously going to be utter fucking bullshit 🤷🏻♂️🤪
📌
I'm calling bullshit
No.335 of things that never happened!
Yep, the Daily Mail supported Hitler and the Nazis and Mosely and the British Union of Fascists. Owned by the same family back then as it is now.
It’s a story about a young boy who was told he couldn’t be referred to their NHS Occupational Health therapist because he went to private school. There are a handful of other examples in the article - all children being “denied” NHS education related occupational health care 2/13
So why would that be? Well, the Children and Families Act 2014 meant that educational services such as speech and languages therapy and occupational therapy provided by the local authority to state schools, aren’t available to non special independent schools 3/13
Who was in power in 2014? Oh, that’s right - it was the Tories👍🏼 Which is weird because the DM spoke to 3 different Tory MPs (no Labour obvs!) who seemed really rather angry at this “vile class war, “quasi-Marxist class war” and “unfair discrimination”🤷🏼♀️ 4/13
Basically, the NHS is providing the therapists but it is the local authority who is paying for it. And that’s a service they are responsible for paying for for children within the state school system. 5/13
Now I can understand that parents may not know that’s how the system works. Their school should have explained it to them and should help them access the support they need - but it won’t be funded by the Local Authority once you opt out of the state system. 6/13
As for Neil O'Brien and the other Tories wailing about “vile class wars” and it being “unfair”? Do they not know that this system is happening under legislation brought in by TORIES in 2014? Ignorant? Or just love a bit of rage-farming Labour bashing? 7/13
@eddavey.libdems.org.uk @carladenyer.bsky.social @teamlabouruk.bsky.social @the-independent.com @theguardian.com @krishgm.bsky.social @lewisgoodall.com @therestpolitics.bsky.social
And you’d have thought that the Daily Mail might have gently pointed out to the mother who “complained bitterly and asked who created these eligibility criteria” that it was indeed the Tories. But no, why would the DM do that when they can attack Labour instead?🤦🏼♀️ 8/13
The DM drop in that little paragraph highlighting that this is ONLY to do with OT treatment- only to do with the educational support services. Yet they want to scare people into thinking private school kids will be DENIED NHS care That’s a horrendous, scaremongering claim 9/13
They even throw in a story about a young cancer patient to try and widen the coverage. But that was about the cost of tutoring on the ward. The council provide it for state schools. And for whatever reason the private school weren’t offering it for their own students. 10/13
Previously liked thread, subscribed to substack after your piece: James O'Brien, LBC, today. Excellent work, don't read the DM, knew it was lying but not how, your thread & interview cleared it up, doubt I would have known otherwise if not for the thread. JO'B Interview will reach wider audience

Brilliant analysis. Thanks so much.
So as ever - when you see a headline that makes you furious: 📍stop and take a breath 📍does it really sound plausible? 📍could there be more context? 📍do the people sharing the story have an agenda? 📍have a little dig around! Because there is ALWAYS more to it! 11/13
These 'journalists' and politicians are fully conscious of their deceit - and yet they sleep like well-fed babies with clean nappies.
Well done Emma.
And who reduced the provision of hospital education so it is more often done by personal tutoring instead of an education unit in paediatrics? Yes, the Tories. Bet most of the private school parents were fine with education budget restrictions and decimating LAs at the time.
Thanks for a excellent thread. There are few certainties in life, but you can always rely on the DM for hypocritical and biased rage farming. My disgust for the DM goes back to May 1971 (I’m that old) when the DM bought The Daily Sketch and assaulted my dear old mum with hate stories for 25 years …
I totally get the SEN issues and you properly put the DM coverage into perspective. However I find the tuition fees for the child undergoing cancer treatment as casually dismissive. Those parents and the child will under immense strain and will have paid their share in to the state system.
So you've literally got an MP on the Health and Social Care select committee spreading lies about the outcome of Tory legislation. FFS.
Is it too much to expect MPs to research facts, especially when in the party that introduced the system, before spreading incorrect information?
'There is clearly a two-tier system in place'... Yep, one's state education, the other's private. What she wants, it seems, is have a private education for her child and for the state to take up the slack. Sorry, but if you opt out, you opt out.
Well, no, you wouldn't have thought that the Mail might have done that. One might have thought it of a real newspaper. If there still were any.
But she doesn't mind a 2 tier education system!
But two tier good when it's in her favour (school)?
Of course they know and understand. But it is an opportunity to lie to the public (who do not understand) and so the DM and Tories will take it.
Were any of the named Tory MPs in Parliament when this was voted on? It would not be the first time a Tory has complained about a law they personally voted for. www.lawgazette.co.uk/law/nigel-ev...
It was obviously a nonsensical story
knowledge is under-rated...
Why on earth wouldn’t the independent schools allocate funds to support students with additional educational or healthcare needs? Almost looks like they’re more interested in saving money than the wellbeing of their student body…
Couldn't non specialist private schools be legally required to pay for occupational therapy? Sure that would led to more complaints from the Tories though. 🤷♂️
Not really because each child’s provision is specified in their EHCP - which the local authority pays ideally by identifying a school with therapy provided but parents can choose whatever school they want & assume therapy will just be available. The system is fucked
If it's an entirely rechargeable service, presumably the NHS could provide it to children at private schools, providing that the school paid the going rate?
The Daily Mail also doesn’t seem to know that occupational health and occupational therapy are fundamentally different things.
The Daily Mail knows its readers are too dumb to know that occupational health and occupational therapy are different things… ~TFIFY 😉
our local NHS Minor Injury Centre has a hot line from Harrow School.......oh, just pop in matron.... LOL
The rules are somewhat arcane and it's true parents will not know what they are before they F Nd themselves in a position where they have to know. Having said that, if the child is eligible for a state special school or has an EHC stating an independent *special* school he may get the support.
So for me it looks as if the parents have some thinking to do about how they feel about their child having a serious disability and whether they are prepared to take a step that will help the child, but may not lead to the future they had imagined.
Heard you on @mrjamesob.bsky.social - well done!
Thank you!
Great stuff 👍🏻👏👏
The Tory MPs are probably so stupid that they didn't realise it was their party that I produced this. And that makes their 'indignant rage' seem more authentic.
@skyview.social unroll
📌 A thread for a rebuttal for the inlaws
I agree 100% on all your content. I only found all this out because my daughter briefly went to a small independent school, years ago. I discovered that she had not received her jab against Cervical Cancer at school, as all her old friends had. By the time I'd found out, she needed an extra jab.
Thanks for a detailed explanation Emma
Another example of people liking to privatise profits and socialise losses?
Great interview on the JOB show Emma. Will definitely be following your substack posts 🙏👏
Thank you!
Eh? WTF are they talking about?
And this is why you can’t trust anything the Mail says.
What are the school spending the fees on if SEND provision isn't one of the things?
Taxis
Our institutions should protect us from influence operations like the #DailyFail
What a load of bullshit
Brilliant explanation.
Great work Emma and well done on @mrjamesob.bsky.social show today!
Thank you!
Excellent thread, but so frustrating that a few people who already have critical thinking ability on BS will read this compared to thousands of outraged morons who will salivate before voting Reform.
Thanks Emma. Following now.
SLT and OT are educational provision for SEN purposes, even if delivered by HCPs with NHS lanyards who are based in hospitals. That’s it - appreciate your efforts but I’m not sure it needs a thread to explain! Easy for the Mail to exploit these foibles of health/education funding…
Thanks for this thread Emma. Disappointingly, my mother reads the Daily Mail and brought up this headline last night. I was able to give her a full response to which she had no reply!
Hoorah! That’s why I do what I do! I can’t persuade DM readers with my threads, but I can better arm their relatives to be able to chip away!! 😈🤓😆
Please, Emma, Alttext is NOT „Screenshot of Headline“ - it’s pretty easy to copy and paste the headline in the Alttext too 😘
Apologies - I had been copying and pasting all the words in. For some reason I assumed that phones might be able to “read” them if they were all text. Plus Alttext cut off lots of text as it seems have a limit. Lesson learnt. I’ll go back to copying and pasting👍🏼
2000 characters are the limit. I just drives me wild if I see that Alttext included icon (🥰) and then there’s „headline“ or „screenshot“ added (🤬). 🙋🏻♀️
Do you use alt text? Reason I ask is I use gifs and never know what to write. Do you have any advice?
Thanks for asking. Typically, you choose a gif to support what's written or to respond to a post. Imagine you can't see the gif... how do you describe the content?
So you want all the detail? And do you mention race/skin colour?
This is how Republicans work in the US as well. For example, Republicans added amendment after amendment to ObamaCare and then they didn't vote for the bill. The amendments were to torpedo US healthcare. Then they campaigned against ObamaCare based on the amendments they put in it.

Heard you on LBC today keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Thank you for explaining this. I saw the article and knew there would be more to it than they were trying to make us believe.
👏
Lies again from the gutter press.
As you detail Daily Mail click bait
Thanks for unravelling this....knew in my bones it was a piece of hyped up anti-Labour rhetoric when I saw the front page headline. Don't know which is worse the DM or the MoS - they really are the pits.
Thankyou!
The media is responsible for almost all of the problems this country faces, because they routinely mislead people as to where the problem lies, who is to blame, and where the solution might be found.
Sounds to me like an excuse. NHS services are supposed to be free at the point of use. It isn't part of the social contract that indy school users are excluded from certain of them. The legislation is just a technical loophole which any government should fix. Are homeschooled kids excluded too?
Like I said, it's an excuse. Classify them under education and you can get away with not providing it to certain people. Notably, people you don't like. They should be health services and available to everyone who needs them.
So the Tories (who brought the law in) don't like privately educated children? Well, you could be right. There is a lot of self-loathing going on with that lot, I suppose.
I don't think that's why they did it. Services remained available to special schools in the independent sector, and the issue affects hardly anyone else, so it may have just been dismissed as having no significant impact.
I think it's an 'educational' service and home ed kids, as far as I know, get no help with paying for exams or accessing any state educational services. Back in the 2010s individual exam subjects cost a lot and you had to 'negotiate' to take the exam in a state school or pay for a private exam venue
We're currently finding out that the same seems to apply to someone who wants to retake an exam. after leaving school.
I would image so since the 2014 Tory produced legislation specifically excluded pupils not educated in a state school.
Which is wrong and unfair. Especially since getting OT privately is - and I speak from personal experience - impossible.
He would have been referred to Occupational Therapy not Occupational Health, they are quite different departments.
'Mum who chose to send child to a leopard school complains that NHS doesn't provide face-eating protection'
Excellent analysis and explanation - thank you for your thread.
To sum up the Mail is lying again.
The Brexiter Journal Daily Fail - and what a fail that was/is! 😂
Why is there a Daily Mail? What does it do other than rage farm and intentionally mislead the already ignorant readers that think it's somehow a 'news'paper. It's not even good toilet paper.
The online edition is particularly poor as toilet paper.
People read it in droves - unfortunately!
LBC would do well to give you a show Emma. 👏👏👏
Emma 👏👏👏
Thanks for this thread, I saw the headline and flicked through the story and reckoned this must be something to do with the relationships of educational and health authorities and probably of long standing.
I saw this headline on the front page and my immediate thought was "Things that never happened". But a lot of dimwits who call themselves "critical thinkers" and other people "Sheeple" will believe the rage bait headline and take it at face value.
Thankyou for posting this and linking it to factual evidence. Unlike the scummy papers that report it.
It gave them a chance to gripe about yet another "two-tier" system. Which is odd given that private vs. state schooling is itself a two-tier system of education.
Anything the Daily Mail says is garbage
Essential reading for those who don’t like to be deceived.
The lies aside. If you can afford private school fees you can afford to go private for OT.
Thank you. So obviously way more to the story than a simplistic 'ARE YOU ANGRY? BE ANGRY, GO ON, DO IT' headline can be bothered to cover.
The Fail loves to distort everything
Honestly, I'd rather get my news from the Beano than MSM and even less the Mail.
Thanks
Good you are back today to tell the truth
Absolute lies it simply wudnt happen the medical professional ethics wud stop them turning anyone away never mind a 8 yr old. 100% lies.
