I'm just not sure how you separate the two this year. If Judge finishes strong, Yankees make the playoffs, if he doesn't, there's a good chance they don't. Same with Cal. If they both finish strong, it's a race and Judge is still the favorite, but if one team makes the playoffs, there's your MVP imo

It's basing the vote on the Value of Judge or Cal to their in the middle of playoff race teams - if one of the other racks up the numbers but their team misses the playoffs, then ok, but I don't think that's going to happen.
