It isn’t exclusively to the idea of Americans being unique, but that America is. And if you believe that, you interpret the same events differently depending on where they happen.

Ah. OK. Thank you; I think I see what you're getting at. I've been a bit leery of people trying to argue that Americans are just letting this all happen, when in reality there's a lot of reasons behind the lack of action. Doesn't make it ok, but it's way more complex than just "brainwashing."
