One of many moments in Omar El Akkad’s new book, “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,” that will stop you in your tracks.

There is an impulse in moments like this to appeal to self-interest. To say: These horrors you are allowing to happen, they will come to your doorstep one day; to repeat the famous phrase about who they came for first and who they'll come for next. But this appeal cannot, in matter of fact, work. If the people well served by a system that condones such butchery ever truly believed the same butchery could one day be inflicted on them, they'd tear the system down tomorrow. And anyway, by the time such a thing happens, the rest of us will already be dead. No, there is no terrible thing coming for you in some distant future, but know that a terrible thing is happening to you now. You are being asked to kill off a part of you that would otherwise scream in opposition to injustice. You are being asked to dismantle the machinery of a functioning conscience. Who cares if diplomatic expediency prefers you shrug away the sight of dismembered children? Who cares if great distance from the bloodstained middle allows obliviousness. Forget pity, forget even the dead if you must, but at least fight against the theft of your soul.

A final passage from “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This” that continues to haunt me.

it does from what is said. The Bush- and Obama-era practice of labeling just about any man killed by the U.S. military as a terrorist until proven otherwise is one of the most pernicious policies to come of the post-9/11 years, and for good reason. It doubly defiles the dead, first killing then imposing upon them: designation they are no longer around to refute. It also renders them untouchable in polite society. Should a drone vaporize some nameless soul on the other side of the planet, who among us wants to make a fuss? What if it turns out they were a terrorist? What if the default accusation proves true, and we by implication are labeled terrorist sympathizers, ostracized, yelled at? It is generally the case that people are most zealously motivated by the worst plausible thing that could happen to them. For some, the worst plausible thing might be the ending of their bloodline in a missile strike. Their entire lives turned to rubble and all of it preemptively justified in the name of fighting terrorists who are terrorists by default on account of having been killed. For others, the worst plausible thing is being yelled at.

“Some things are complicated. Some things have been complicated.” The manipulation of language enables violence. One of many important insights from Omar El Akkad’s powerful prose.

Some things are complicated. Some things have been complicated. There is an art to this sort of thing. Of all the aftereffects of the War on Terror years, the most frequently underestimated is the heightened derangement of language for the purpose of sanitizing violence. It's a phenomenon that's by no means unique to that one moment in American history, but anyone who lived through the NATO invasion of Afghanistan and the decimation of Iraq will be familiar with the hallmark uses of this shadow vocabulary. No one, during those years, was ever tortured, only subjected to enhanced interrogation. When a soldier pulling at a joystick thousands of miles away mistook a wedding party for a terror cell and sent a missile-wielding drone to incinerate the lot, nobody was killed; there was only some collateral damage (a term first coined to describe the killing in Vietnam). No prisoners, who require a prison sentence, only detainees, who can be held forever without charge. And when those detainees, after years of confinement to cells not much bigger than broom closets, went on hunger strikes, they were engaged in

Going out on a limb and predicting your rep calls himself a 'Christian conservative'. 'Christian conservatives' are the most likely to have rejected the actual teachings of Christ, but throwing a few Bible verses at these hypocrites is what Jesus would tell these Pharisees and money worshippers.

We are born deep into it. It isn't something we can prevent from happening because in some form or another it has been happening since before we were born. It is truly horrific to wake up to this fact and to realize the best we can hope for is to help stop it. Stop it from getting worse. Stop it all

Every action we take to stop it helps. We can't be immobilized by the size and weight of it. We have to work to stop it. Together.

When the Dem Party first failed the people, back 50 years ago when it was known that neither party honored what the people wanted, but just kept catering, like whores, to the oligarchs $, lying for votes. Then did whatever they were paid to do by the Corporations. That is when this started.

50 years is weird timeframe for this, you mean the nomination of Carter was 'failing the people'? He was perhaps the most populist Dem president, just retconned when there was trouble

Moving and true - where it’s true. One of my principles as an organizer was: “Walk on all the legs you’ve got.” For people with empathy, you don’t need self-interest. If s-i works with those who won’t or can’t feel for “others” I’m ok w/ appealing to it.

It's not self interest in the sense that being in a cult isn't really in one's self interest. Lots of MAGA will die for Trump. I think that's why these appeals to self interest (you might lose your job or SS or Medicare) aren't as foolproof as one might think. The truth is scarier. ...

Absolutely true. Another important organizing principle is that you can’t reach everybody, but you can reach some people. Different approaches work with diff ppl, with some, nothing will work. Don’t waste time, target strategically. If you’re lucky, you’ll reach enough.

If only Americans had the courage to take these words to heart. You see people actually doing something about their problems in Georgia (the country), Serbia, and Turkey to name a few, so there's no reason why they can't do the same across the pond.

People are doing something. All over the country, people are doing things. Openly and in secret. Constantly calling our officials. Demanding town halls. Demonstrations. Boycotts. That's not getting into the illegal activities. We are fighting - not enough of us yet, but we are.

I was one of the people originally enraged by 9/11 because I was living in Queens and working in midtown Manhattan when it happened. I remember watching tower one fall from a bridge. Back then I wanted all Muslims to die. It took several good friends to make me realize my anger was misplaced.
