There was a time when a kid with the most severe forms of Autism were diagnosed as "retarded" or at one time, even possessed.

Some with less severe forms were diagnosed as being incorrigible or delinquents and corporal punishment was the "cure".

And those on the spectrum but highly intelligent and functional were deemed to be nerds, creeps, anti-social and bullied and ostracized.
