I see it as an attempt to depict the Earth where corporations are striving so hard over generations to collect animals that every normal person would want even _further_ from earth. Contract slavery, sociopathic CEO's living in artificial islands, owned cities...

all of it more interesting than that one giant bug! There are many more stories to tell in this setting than in the rest of the series combined, since every other entry rests on being confined in limited space with something that kills better than you do.
