And, a strange footnote: this is the front page of that fateful September edition of The Link, published the very day miserable, joyless R A Bennett wrote his letter. It describes itself as a “Social Medium”, so it’s intriguing to see how Barrett titles that issue’s opening essay

Front page, The Link, September 2020. As before, the masthead shows head and shoulders drawings of a man and a woman, and text reads: A Monthly Social Medium for Lonely People, No.56. The Great Social Medium – NOT Matrimonial. The front page is all text, and a note at the bottom reads: The Attention of Advertisers is directed to “The Link” Bureau – see page 2. In other words, never mind this essay, what you want is inside. The important bit, though, is the title of the essay on the front page: The Monthly Twitter
