This picture appears widely online identified as Mary Anning’s friend Elizabeth Philpot, but this is Sarah Jane Newman née Philpott, born in Wiltshire in 1823, married Henry Barker Newman in 1844, and died in Hobart, Tasmania in 1877. There are no known portraits of Elizabeth Philpot of Lyme Regis.
What was she doing all the way down in Tassie?
Emigrated from England sometime after 1852 when the last of their 4 children were born in Wiltshire. Her husband was a licensed victualer. He and their eldest son also died in Hobart. One died in Sydney and another in Richmond, Victoria.
