While movies from existing IPs have been around for virtually the entire existence of cinema, it's nonetheless true that they dominate box office in a way that didn't used to be the case. It's just become really hard for original movies to make biggity bux.
Original material has many more outlets than movie theaters. Leaving movie theaters with mostly either existing IPs or those creators looking for the bygone prestige of a theatrical release.
