He was impeached for violating the Tenure of Office Act(newly passed law). He tried to fire the Sec. of War w/o the permission of the Senate. Like Trump’s 2nd impeachment Johnson would have been removed if it only took a Majority vote to remove. It takes 2/3 and they were one vote shy.
