Why does the government tax office not know how many folk are working in America? This is how it's done in the rest of the world.

I don't know how US compares to rest of world in this regard, but there are a lot of self employed, limited partners, etc that pay taxes quarterly vs every week

In Europe, even if you are self employed, you still have to pay basic National Insurance (towards your pension) on a monthly basis.
