Tonight's reading: Hunters in the Snow a (musical!) play by Clive Barker

Cover of the play Hunters in the Snow. Original art by Clive Barker shows windswept mountains made of dour faces. A blizzard blankets the scene

The title comes from a Pieter Bruegel painting and much of the imagery is drawn from Bruegel oeuvre. There is also at least one William Blake reference that I caught. Painters and painting are definitely core tho this play.

Quite good, but maybe not what you'd expect from Clive Barker if you only know him from horror.

This play ran for two nights only, but it introduced the Dutchman (played by Doug Bradley). Aspects of the Dutchman would return as Pinhead, Candyman, and Mamoulian from The Damnation Game.

Thirteen years later, when seeing himself as Pinhead for the first time in the mirror, Bradley would recall one of his lines from this play: I am in mourning for my humanity.
