At the very least what they could have actually done is bar him from public office, but they were too scared to do even that

Hate to be this person, but a president doesn’t need to be convicted in impeachment to be barred from public office. Senate can bar someone from future office with a simple majority vote without the 2/3rds needed for conviction, and you can bar someone under 14th Amendment for insurrection (sorry)
