America was a much less conspicuous place in the 70s (although from the memorabilia she lived there in early 80s)

Yeah 80s. I feel you, but as I was growing up relatively comfortably (but def not wealthy) in 70s/80s, most friends/classmates I knew had a full bed unless they were sharing a room. Obviously very anecdotal. Just struck me as odd considering TFG always has to have “the biggest, the best) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
