I became an old white hippie in my 20’s when I started listening to Neil Young and the Grateful Dead. Haven’t looked back since.

Kent State. I was 10.
I was 16. “Ohio”, by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young became our theme song. 🎵 “Gotta get down to it, soldiers are cutting us down. Should have been gone long ago. What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know?”
I started attending political science or history classes when i was 3 and then got to second hand smoke weed with the students later while they were discussing stuff. My mom didn’t want me in child care facilities, so I’ve been blessed with 32 smoking babysitters lol.
😂🤣😂🤣 amazing
I remember being awestruck when rock exploded away from the bubblegum era. (somewhat remember), I was surrounded by a Purple Haze in a world of Orange Sunshine.
Oh my! What a rush of nostalgia...CSNY, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Seals and Croft, Frank Zappa, 10 Years After, 10CC, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Earth, Wind & Fire, Allman Bros., Edger and Johnny Winters, Alice Cooper....O.K. I'm done. Now I'll never get to sleep.
Oooh. 🔥🔥🔥 pls give me five songs (or more)!
Same. My 20s were 50 years ago….
Check out the Allman Brothers Band.
Tin soldiers and … rings on her fingers…
Hi Tom! I didn’t forget about you. I had lost access to my account here. I started Substack as a backup substack.com/@michellekoh...
No worries. Things happen when they happen.
Me too
Listen to Steven Stills Manassas album one of my all time favorites
Brought up surrounded by hippies. Its not just music but how you view the world. Punks were just angry hippies as nothing had changed :-)
I was listening to Blues Project, Rolling Stones, Pentangle, Joni Mitchell - Neil Young - etc Onward💪🙏💙🇺🇸🥳
Was marijuana involved?
Of COURSE. Still is.
I'll vouch for that.
Me too.
Thanks to all who helped create this: open.spotify.com/playlist/3C8...
One more for consideration: youtu.be/zPx2t7xoF1k?...
Great list! Love to see the DKs and Dropkicks in there, but it's all great stuff.
Harvest Moon is my go to soundtrack
Omg I LOVE IT
These days we have Phish instead of the Dead. But we still have Young. Thank God...
Equating Phish to The Dead is a gross disservice to both.
Let’s add some Phish songs! Recs pls:)
I guess this is the obvious one... www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Jp...
🌻sunshine daydreams🌞
They're still playing Neil Young and the Grateful Dead (and Janis Joplin and Grace Slick) on airwaves all over the world all these years later. I don't think they'll be playing Britney or Justin Bieber forty years from now.
I did after tripping in the Army on a guard duty in Germany in '81 and heard Workingman's Dead for the first time. The guy I got it from asked me if I'd tripped before, I told him no. He replied, you'll only need one tab then. I told him, great, give me three. I'd planned on an Army career...
Nor should u
Marrakech Express greeted me as I returned from a trip to Tangiers in 1969 (?). Needless to say Tangier's attraction wasn't the beer...
Saw the Grateful Dead in the 70's at the Yale Bowl in New Haven CT. Will see Neil Young tomorrow at Fiddlers Green in Greenwood Village CO.
right by your side. 💙☮️🌻
Right on!
Really happy to have gotten dispatched by my Local (#15) to run a spotlight for Neil next week. I've seen him numerous times but never had the pleasure of working one of his shows. Looking fwd to it!
Keep rockin’ in the free world Sizta✌️
Ya gotta check out Laura Nyro - one of my favs from my hippie days
Yep.same
.. Neil Young's song Ohio is pretty relevant now ... What we are in now is worse ..
"For What It's Worth" just came on.
It was the first song on my shuffle this morning. It definitely set the tone of the day. I cried about not having a bit of water from all my beloved homes to share at a ceremony. Sigh.
Yup...
The Dead, The Doors and Dylan will guide you to the truth. Welcome.
Same. I'd blast Hendrix at high school. The music teacher adored me.
If you haven't watched the 'my back pages' clip on YouTube with all the heavyweights and Neil being Neil.. you otter. 😁
Same
me too...such good music back then...Leonard Cohen had that great album too w So Long Marianne etc...and so much more musically too. The White Album from the Beatles...
Ahh..the Beatles..
yes! i still listen to the White Album esp when i was riding my bike...my corny old walkman & long rides! i can't wait to be recovered enuf to get back to that for exercise...this walking stuff is soooooo boring...& my back hates it! 😒
You gotta do it hon..I swam for my back..although I sprained something overdoing it lol..
can you get back to swimming yet?
Not yet..I sprained my sacroiliac joint. In October when we go to Puerto Rico for vacation. I'll be good then.
ouch! I like Puerto Rico...we went to Old San Juan when i was kid...and the beach was nice too where we were...but i got a really bad sun burn...the sun was so strong...Sounds like a great vacay coming up for you...also, the minerals in the sea are really good for your muscles...
El Morro..
is that a place? a city? are you staying there?
That's the famous fort from the 1600s in Old San Juan.
This is our second vacation this year. We went to Curacao in May.
sounds good...i am opposite...i am such a home body...i love being at home & doing all my stuff outdoors in my hood & stuff around the house...
We love going away..but until recently I couldn't sit in planes that long. Now I can. The big one will be if I can go to Europe..maybe Italy..not sure when..
Yup..been to Old Juan a few times. Hotel is Hilton Caribe in Condado..we've been there before. And when we were all young there was no sunscreen lol..
that's right...no such thing as sunscreen back then...but we stayed at a famous hotel that had the courtyard and then all the balconies on each floor of the courtyard with tropical plants & the spanish tiles...I remember the house detective dancing w maid one nite! 🤣 so cute!
Ha! Funny..
+ at MD Anderson has me in physical therapy and massage therapy cuz the adhesions get very tight & there are also paresthesias in my arms from the surgery. Lots of shock to the nerves apparently. So moving is very important. That PT hurts alot, but it helps.
I love massages..
yah...me too...MD Anderson is doing all they can to make sure i am recovering from the surgery...which is good...i have a good team...
My ortho surgeons also..just saw him..now 2 years since spinal fusion.
i can't wait to be 2 yrs post sx...i am 2.5 months post surgery...
I am sure..you'll get there..
so you had the sprain when you went to see him? did he say anything about it?
He felt the spot..I had the pain exactly there. So he gave me a cortisone shot and Meloxicam. Nothing else to do now.
I know exactly what you mean..
yah...back injuries impact your nerves alot too...
I actually got bad sciatica in my legs. But theyre fine now.
ugh...sciatica...i have never had it...but just thinking about it makes me cringe...you said your surgery corrected that, right?
Yes I have no leg pain whatsoever.
TY...for encouragement...the thing that's good about the walking is that it's hot outside and it warms up my muscles making them less tight...my upper back, parallel to my incision which goes clear across my chest, is very sore. In part cuz i can't ride the bike. So sweating helps a bit. My team+
I don't ride the bike now..I used to before my back. But I swim..
Use a heating pad..it helps loosen my back..
i really should do that...it's so dang hot here right now...even w a fan and AC on...i still get warm when i go to bed...i do let shower pound down on my back...that feels good...i would love to have a sauna! ☺️
Sauna in Texas? Lol isn't that a given? The climate..
🤣😉 when i was still working, i would go to a gym after work...they had a really nice sauna...i loved it...clears you pores, so relaxing on the muscles...when i walk outside, i get covered w sahara dust & muggy sweat...that's the best we can do here...🙄
Oh I do love saunas..always did..loosens up your muscles..
Neil Young is still great. Saw him this month 🎼✌️🌎
Been to four shows. The best.
Likewise
🌈☮️✌️🕊️
I was born an old white hippie. 😂 Seriously, though, you can thank Peter Tork for radicalizing me at age 8.
Ahead of the curve 🔥💕🦋😍🌈
🙌
Wow.. freaking cool
I always thought he was so cute.
He was. Even though I had that thing for the lanky twangy Texan he hung around with.
Mike Nesmith!
😁 Yes. #nezhead
Lol - while we were listening to Neil Young as we drove through Southern Vermont today back from hanging on the Maine shoreline last week, I reflected on how powerful the 60s were in my upbringing. You really can't have gone too wrong with that. Still remember the first Earth Day in Ithaca ...
Grew up listening to Neil Young. His Dad, Scott (a writer) had a place near our town (Peterborough, Ontario), and I got to lounge around the pool with Neil's sister ( a friend's girlfriend @ the time) in 1980. His music always hit my soul.
Wow! What a story. Thank you.
The little town where they lived was called Omemee, Ontario. I didn't know Neil & Hannah moved back into the area but, supposedly they now have a place nearby.
wow...very cool!
smoking weed did it for me. I didn't even have a cassette player.
I'm a 60 year old white guy. Neil Young is one of those artists whose music just grabbed my soul when I was about 17 and has never let go. Live Rust pulled me in....
I was a hippie because, the sixties man! It was groovy.
The OG!!
That was my teens, but yeah.
We're everywhere. bsky.app/profile/amer...
Omg I LOVE THIS!! Thank youuuu
You are so kind! 1950's and 60's originals will be dying out. Nice to know you'll keep the homefires burning. Don't forget to block the exits.
When did we become so much weaker? Ironically, many of those revolutionaries ended up going corporate..
Omg yes they did
Benjamin Franklin said I believe..that a democracy is great..if you can keep it. We didn't. We voted it out.
One of them even went into NYS government lol..One was on Wall Street..
An evolving prophet motive?
What does that mean?
With maturation. Perhaps some evolved from spiritual guides of humanity to dollar signs with added zeros.
Yeah but you can't lose your empathy, ethics or morals while you do it..
Ahh..now I see what you were referring to. I hadn't idea..
I suppose we had lives..families..careers..and we got complacent politically.
There is never a guarantee that it would continue indefinitely..we needed to make sure it didn't.
Good for you! I got hooked on both around 1968 at age 12.
Yeah. That is what happened.
Hippies are from a certain time period. We can be just like them, but never truly be one. Unless you're in your 80s.
Did ya know that Stephen Miller used the label against protesters? Yeah. I’m an old white hippie.
BS. My older cousins were hippies, but they taught me that making money on the backs of others and endless feeding of the MIC would lead us to hell. Too many gave up too soon. You can do it. But, it's more than music.
Disagree. The folks that started the movement are that old, but the movement continues to this day, with people hopping off and on the whole time ✌️
Neil! Love that guys music. The ditch trilogy are amazing, but he has so much more that is so freaking good. We can’t take Neil for granted!
10/10 decision. I went DMB, but both are valid.
I was radicalized by reading all those banned books as a teen during my high-school years. Most were required reading in English class.
Wow. Amazing perspective!!
Not anymore..
Good for you!!!!
Early 1990’s:) how bout you?
1970!
Amazing history. Well done, LEADER.
Thank you. But sadly, no leader. Just a pathetic observer. Don't tell me. I should be doing more. But I just don't have the energy. More power to YOUR elbow!
89 and I never looked back
79 and ditto!
At 20 you considered yourself old?really?
No not at all:) I’m referring to the insult Stephen Miller tried to use when he called protesters “old white hippies”
Oh!
Yeah he thought it was an insult?? Not even close!
The old white hippies are one of the groups that is taking this shitshow seriously. We’ve seen something similar (that now looks almost quaint) before. Resist!
Stephen Miller fears or hates or both us..
BIGLY
Yup
I got on the same bus.🌹
I became a hippie when we moved from KY to Austin in 70. Back when Willie merged the hippies and the rednecks. And I've been one ever since
Neil has a new tune ‘ big crime ‘ in honor of Don.
I’m proud to be an old white hippie.
Love your taste of music, you don’t look old. Sorry for the loss of your grandpa, he was a hero. We’re gonna HOLD THE FUCKING LINE , HTFL. They don’t have the sack for heavy stuff
Neil Young is the truth.
Saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Omni in Atlanta early 70's. Four sets, best concert I have seen. Encore was 20 min version of Southern Man.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 wow
Just another Friend of the Devil....
I consider myself part-hippie but I’ve never really listened to Young or the Dead. I’m on the Strawberry Alarm Clock, Incense and Peppermint, lava lamp, bean bags, mushrooms, and hemp hammock side of things.
LOVE IT!! Thank youuu
Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow ✌️💕
Try this dead live album skull and roses. Recorded about 70 and has been remastered.
I can’t promise that’s gonna happen. I’m watching West Side Story right now.
No one is ever too young to realize they’re an old hippie. Why drum your fingers for sixty years waiting to be fabulous? 🩵😄
so did I. same. peace.
Been a hippie since 1968 when I returned back to the states. Yes I’m old but I’m still a hippie ✌️💕💨
That's when I sat on my cousin's shoulders to see Baez. I was 7. Never looked back. Though, McLachlan (Angel is on right now) is superb. I need that kinda comfort.
Fair
Before you call yourself an old white hippie you have to be old, geez! 🙄
Yes I know but Stephen Miller called the protesters “old white hippies” so this is in response:) SOLIDARITY
You should look back so you can realize the mistake you made thinking Grateful Dead were a good band...
Fuck you.
The Dead aren't just a band they are a phenomenon. Btw Jerry Garcia is renowned to other musicians. Let me guess your into Kiss big time? Amiright?
Where the hell did you get Kiss?? 🤣🤣
There is still hope for you! “We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.” ― Jerry Garcia
I resemble this…
I'm pretty sure your first sentence was a check box on the application form I filled out to become an old hippie. CHECK!! 🤣
I'm older. First concert I went to was The Allman Brothers Band at Madison Square Garden in NYC in 1973. Then the Dead at the Nassau Coliseum in '73. They spent a lot of time tuning up, but no one cared. After all it was as much as a party as a concert.
And we all say Stephen Miller…suck our dicks…!
I keep looking back and wondering what happened to all those hippies who later became MAGA. This country was headed in the right direction until Reagan became president.
Saw Neil about a week ago.. still has it, great band.. I remember exactly where I was standing when I first heard Southern Man in 8 th grade and the only time I ever stood in front of a class of fellow students without crying in fear was to present a report on the song Ohio..
But are you Experienced?
Have you ever seen the rain?
Me too. Steady diet of classical until around age 27. Best part, I discovered great rock from before I was born. I wasn’t bound by any memory from my late teens that makes the music special. Listening to Bo Diddley evolve from his original music into rock over the span of 40 tunes on one album.
Wonderful 💕🌸🦋
I was living in Gainesville, FL in the early 80's. A few times a year, Bo Diddley would have outdoor music jams at his home in nearby Archer, FL and I was lucky to hang out and occasionally jam with the local music community. A true thrill.
Wow.
That is delightful. It must feel so good to have had that live connection.
Very much so. Gainesville was/is a great music scene. Long after he had left town, Tom Petty's band house was still a party house, and jams were routine.
The bus came by and I got on it’s where it all began
Ditto.
My 20’s (in the 90’s) were total grunge but I always had a Neil Young or Rusted Root cd on hand
Grudge was kinda a hippie meets punk type of vibe
Every time they go into space I think of Major Tom..
Lol..me too.. Stones..Led Zep..AC DC..the Doors..Woodstock..
CSNY did it for me as did CCR. I was in my teens. Now I'm not. But I'm still a hippie and proud of it.
From a very old hippie cool 😎 420✌🏽
Teens for me — and same. ✌️
Whatever, dishwasher
I guess I was an old white hippie in high school in the mid seventies. What does that make me now? An ancient white hippie I guess. Or maybe a living fossilized white hippie?🙂 Anyway, it's good to be above the dirt.
I was radicalized by “dad rock.”
I became one when I was 15, when I saw the Grateful Dead twice in 1980.
I was radicalized by Arlo (Alice's Restaurant)! It's taking longer than I thought...
That's a tradition of my family at Thanksgiving.
that movie was so funny too! yah...
💙 Neil Young
Imagine how much better off we would be if Stephen Miller had done the same thing.
Hippie is a state of mind and beliefs. New Hippies are being born every day !✌️
That’s right!!
Exactly brother 😎
Don't forget Bob Dylan. youtu.be/fdWto-AUM3Q?...
Watch out you might have urges for brownies too
Now I a 70 year old white hippie
Got any photographic evidence? 😉
Somewhere but definitely not digitally;)
I wouldn’t press you to digitize any of that. I’m imagining some outrageously sexy stuff.
Haha well maybe:)
Let your freak flag fly:)
I love that
My formative youth occurred in the late 60s. I'm sure there is a genre name for the music I love, but I don't know what it is. 1965 to 1975 Rock, Folk. Friends knew names of bands and songs. I just knew sounds. Now, with tech, I'm starting to put them together.
Lemme share: 1966 Electric Circus had a band from the west coast. Fascinating connected never ending medley. 6 mo after seeing them I got "Anthem of the Sun" and realized they were the Grateful Dead.
john Barleycorn must die
Ditto
Late bloomer Still, better late than never. Always take your medicine.
Born an old white hippie
Yay for Hippie's. We grew up in a great time & fought hard for everyone's rights. Still not giving in or giving up.
I’m so grateful. Thank you.
