This is not about child rape though but about Tamany Hall and Catholic education…the Tamany Hall crowd was proposing public funding for parochial education and he saw this as contrary to democracy (and maybe potentially racist—as Irish Catholics had rioted and attacked and burned a Black school?)
Well it also reminds me of the residential school system, which is yet another expression of Christian religious zealots' incomprehensible fetish for harming children. Residential schools were also fundamentally and explicitly racist/genocidal projects as well as devouring children like alligators.
