I assume this happened in part because the people at LEGO realized that this timeline is garbage and that Gen X desperately needs a life preserver

Lego have been serving us Gen-Xers for quite a while already. Seinfeld, Ecto 1, BTTF DeLorean, Atari 2600, and a bunch of Star Wars OT sets definitely not for kids.
