Dear @washingtonpost.com: these two paragraphs are absolute malpractice. Utterly disgraceful. You use total counts, not rates … for the THIRD BIGGEST CITY IN THE US. Of COURSE it has a high total. And rates “have come down” … with a link, but no number. Down FIFTY PERCENT IN FOUR YEARS.

“You look at Chicago, how bad it is. You look at Los Angeles, how bad it is,” Trump said. “We have other cities that are very bad. New York has a problem. And then you have, of course, Baltimore and Oakland. We don’t even mention that anymore. They’re so, so far gone. We’re not going to let it happen.” Chicago, a city of about 2.7 million people, has had the most homicides in the country in each of the past 13 years, with 573 in 2024. Like D.C. and many other major cities, it had a spike in homicides and other violent crime during the covid pandemic, though rates have come down since.

I’d add that the first mention of ANY DATA AT ALL—with the bad news given in numbers (they give total deaths) but the good news buried in a link—comes in paragraph TWENTY-ONE. After quoting Trump three times abt how bad crime is (transcribing falsehoods), and after five ads and two photos. Buried.

No snitch tagging! I see who it is, but figure this angry post isn’t the one for starting off productive engagement. Even the paragraph ordering and the other sorts of calls may be more editor-driven anyway. But this post isn’t one for staring a convo.

I guess if it was an editorial decision, the author has the option to say so, & perhaps even provide the draft as originally written, or at least say they put the stats, using rates, in the top paragraph, etc. I've certainly seen reporters disavow headlines on their articles.
