First bird of my day: wood pigeons on the roof opposite, sitting in the rain. Petrichor is filling the air. #FirstBirdOfMyDay #WhatsYours

First bird of my day: also a woodpigeon, walking round the pond, searching the edges for breakfast. #FirstBirdOfMyDay
To reiterate: Blyth's Hornbills. Swan-like sounding wingbeats.
Had to look that one up. It’s quite a bird!
Indeed. You can't miss them!
Reverted to peeping out for FBOMD, I spied the patriarch of the house sparrow gang chirrupping prominent on the gable end. These guys are such proud proprietors and optimistic refurbishers of their cavity nests. Nothing tops a chirrup near the entrance!
#FirstBirdOfMyDay: there is a young gull who has taken up residence in the small clifftop garden here. They’ve been FBOMD the last two days to greet me with a sideways glance as the House Martins soar overhead & the waves lap in the harbour below.
A gull and a Jackdaw flying past, in opposite directions. A bit of a sea fret here.
Snap! A wood pigeon on the roof. Petrichor filling the air here too 😊 #FirstBirdOfMyDay
#FirstBirdOfMyDay: Brown thrasher was the early bird today. #WhatsYours
One of your regional species that doesn't make it as your 1st bird that much!
They are very good at blending in with the underbrush, so are almost never the first to catch my eye. They seem to have had a very successful breeding year the year, though. I've seen quite a few juniors foraging. 😊
Good news about the sightings of 2025 fledglings/juveniles! Looking into the species again online, I can see their habit and discreet plumage will tend to them not getting 1st bird at any frequency. Some very interesting nuggets about their range of songs and their flexible neck anatomy. 🤓
Robin was here before the rain started, nothing since. #FirstBirdOfMyDay
A gathering of swallows on low trajectories as they swoop, dip low to the ground and sweep back upwards, constantly turning pathways as they avoid each other. #FirstBirdOfMyDay
They have an extraordinary sense of personal space. Never any collisions.
I have, just once in my loooong birding life, witnessed two Swallows colliding. Mind you a Hobby was amongst the flock, so they were probably looking elsewhere.
That’s quite a wonderful picture you’re painting, Richard.
No rain here in Leeds. A woodpigeon is cooing. But long beaten by the crows and magpie, best of all the song thrush, absent last night, is singing; as I finish my tea post a mediocre moth trap 17 of 9 on the allotment, home better at 25 of 17sp. #FirstBirdofMyDay
A pair of sparrows waiting in the Rosa mundi for bits, which were dispersed. 🥰 #FirstBirdOfMyDay
First bird of my day: a Chiffchaff calling in the hedgerow on a drizzly morning. #Firstbirdofmyday
The air is thick with wet and smoke. Crow is right to quibble. #FirstBirdOfMyDay
My first birds of the day was a Starling and a Wood Pigeon sharing an aerial and enjoying the much needed rain
Glorious blue sky here, and the #FirstBirdOfMyDay, the Swifts, are going mad around the balcony. We have a new resident in box 8! He’s been popping in and out for 2 days to claim his home so I’m hoping he’ll be back next year 😺
Sounds like a home successfully claimed! 🤞
It’s also been in and out of the vacant box next door - I’m sure it’s the same bird as it’s really got the hang of the entry /exit business!
Great work 👏 from this banger!
Practice makes perfect!
I opened the window wide to admire the rain, and had to laugh at the wood pigeons, standing out in it when there's plenty of shelter nearby. They seem to really love it.
First bird to catch my eye was a rainbow lorikeet, orange breast glowing in the morning sun. This afternoon the rest of the gang are back in their favourite tree - happy hour in the elms. #FirstBirdOfMyDay #WhatsYours
