Messy in-between would be a good starting point. IMO the people who appear to be following the leader, in this kind of set up, are always just looking for power anyway. Expose this and cracks begin to appear. Yet they can't afford to throw him under the bus. Pretty good trap.

I agree. They’re smart enough to know that the moment he is gone that their broader control of the party will be at risk so they’ll keep him propped up as long as there is life in his body, but the moment he drops it’ll be knives out across the entire right to fill the vacuum.
