it's the only sort of battle they know how to win, and so they keep waging it, and they keep winning it, and their coalition keeps falling to pieces because that's the only rightful reaction.

Yep. Unfortunately it's the only battle they actually want to win, so it's the only one they put up a fight for. Win or lose versus Republicans, they still keep their personal power and ability to launder it for cash. That's what matters to them.
