Like many others, its ICE detention center was formerly a prison that was closed repeatedly for abuse (of children), only to find new life generating twice as much money as an immigrant detention warehouse.
There are plenty of prison towns in LA, but immigrant detention towns are new. Incredibly, they are the result of criminal justice reform: in 2017, w a Dem governor, the state closed some prisons. GEO immediately went to the feds, and got paid double to fill them with immigrants.
