It of course goes back even farther than that. Rush Limbaugh weaponizing the (correct) end of the Fairness Doctrine and the White House Correspondents Association rallying around FOX News after the Obama admin did not want to credential them because they were propaganda. Bad call there.

patriot act. coupled with the badly thought out DCMA and Section 230 from 1996 opened up america to todays "fake news" and " surveillance society run at executive level only" reagans 80s deregulated us into inequality economics and by the late 90s we entered the path to todays end of democracy.
