I recently read "Neurotribes", about the discovery of autism, and unfortunately, the Nazis feature in that history quite prominently. In fact, autistic / ND kids were the first ones they field tested soft-genocide on.

100 percent. It kind of fits with what I was talking about. To an extent they knew that what they were doing would be highly unpopular with the German public, so they kept it quiet. It was still an open secret, but there were surprisingly some displays of public opposition to it. Not enough but 🤷♂️

Oh from what I read, eugenics on the lesser-abled was broadly popular. In fact, there's even letters of parents saying they would be glad to have the government "rid them" of their useless child. It's fucked, but, keep in mind: this was YEARS before the worst genocide the world had ever seen.

... which is to say, the public probably thought the Nazis would just stick to expunging the weak, useless, and I guess, Jews. But the point is that the Nazis used A LOT of coordinated propaganda to sell people on the idea that it was all to secure a better future for German people.
