As an 8-year-old atheist I used to clamp my mouth ostentatiously shut during the 'under God' words, and felt excluded and my patriotism questioned. Boy was I mad many years later when I discovered how recently those words had been added in.

After my 2nd grade public school teacher tried to hold a nativity play and it got canceled because my parents rightfully said wtf, I'd then mumble through the 'under God' part having recognized that it was not my God they were referring to at all.
