I place most of the blame on Thatcher and Reagan. Neoliberal economics and austerity need a scapegoat and unfortunately "The Foreigner" works well everywhere.

'Foundations of Geopolitics', by the swivel-eyed nationalist wingnut aleksandr dugin. Everything that's happened in the last two decades was outlined in that book. They literally handed it to us, said, "This is how we're going to conquer you," and we shrugged and went "Sure, okay."
