They paint them as "extreme" no matter what they say. The words they choose are irrelevant in that specific instance because the Republicans do not need facts to construct that narrative.
Perhaps the best example of this was the Biden border bill which was practically a GOP wishlist of "tough on the border" policies, which was instantly branded as Biden wanting an open border. And yet, the demand to court the right wing continues unabated.
Exactly, there is no end of "meeting in the middle" because the right is committed to shifting the overton window all the way to fascism. They will always say anything a non fascist does is inadequate, so might as well own it and be as non fascist as possible.
This should give you a clue that playing constant defense is for fools who like to lose. The right doesn't require anything to be true for right wingers to believe it, as they already live in a fictional world. No matter how far right you move, they're going to pretend the Dems are far left.
