Yeah, exactly this kind of thing. I've found some of that and am hoping to look for more. But also: radio? telegraphy? Military communications? So many potential areas.
After sleeping on it, I bet you can find calling instructions in the introductory pages of local phone books (before dial phones became universal). I vaguely remember seeing a short film on how to make a call in the late 40s : early 50s.
