Columbus landed on Roatan. The island was part of the slave trade, and the Paya are the indigenous peoples you’re thinking of. Garífuna are on the island and in land disputes with these goons. They’re using expropriation by bribing officials. The locals have been cut off from their water supply.
Roatan has always had incredible seafood surrounding it because of Mangroves and cays, and it’s coral reefs are breathtaking. There are too many cruise ships arriving which has brought this unfortunate change of circumstances for the locals. Tourism doesn’t always have its rewards.
