You should not assume what Beijing or Moscow says to be the literal truth. Assume everything they say is a lie, and then try to find a reason why it isn't in whole or in part a lie.
They get their oil from Russia. That's one reason.
I don't think Putin losing a war would interrupt the flow of oil to China for a single hour. It would probably lower the price. It isn't as if there aren't alternative sources for oil. They have tankers filled with Iranian oil sitting and waiting to be called into the terminal to unload.

China has active & sometimes violent border disputes with RF, India, Bhutan, Nepal, the Philippines, Vietnam, & it's preparing to invade Taiwan. The PLA is an integral part of a political party. There's almost no state less suitable to act as peacekeepers anywhere in the world.

Probably not paying with weapons, but with components or dual use products, like motorcycles, golf carts, cars and trucks that can be used to directly support the illegal invasion.
