I live on the Columbia River, although we can get brutally cold weather, we can also have mild winters. Anything in the brassica family survives anything but the harshest winter. The tomato will have to be on the heated porch. I have snapdragon plants on my deck that are several years old.

I spent a winter in Rantoul Illinois, I thought I knew what winter was, growing up on the northern Oregon border. I did not. Illinois taught me about winter.

Yes, my ex-husband was in the Air Force there. I got there the 1st week of Nov. It snowed a short time later & just kept adding more snow. & more snow, over & over. We didn't have a car until the day before we left, so my memories are snow, flat land, & pizza delivered in a red Pacer w a stem on top

I don't really like kale, but it's still cool :) Our garden boxes are usually covered with snow and ice from October or November- April/May, but I did have a strawberry plant I stuck in the dirt come back to life in May so that was fun. The sage and rosemary I stuck in there too didn't come back.
