One geological timescale? A blink of the eye. One a human timescale? The collapse/extinction will be long and drawn out, with some regions riding things out for awhile as others are hit hard. Wars -nuclear and conventional, famine, pestilence, genocide, hyper-max migrations, cannibalism, it's...

Nature is extremely adaptive and life is extremely resilient. Life lives, then dies, and what is left is used in many other configurations, a process that has been happening since even before life began on this tiny ball of rock. Life will only die off completely when the sun cinders the planet.
