My beef is that 3rd Way produced no data for this list. They just assert that voters are alienated by the words. (My intuition says they are right some of the time, but for every word??) In general, Dems need to figure out what is going on with calling voter reg, ID and propensity to vote D.

Yeah is "food insecurity" really that alienating to people?

People are insecure about lots of things. Their looks, their capabilities, their social status, you name it. So what does it mean to be food insecure? Are people afraid of a food shortage, so they buy way more than they need? Insecure about their culinary sophistication? Hunger is simpler.

I get that the term has been around for decades, but it hits me the way "locally sourced"/"foodie"/"artisanal" & "curated" (when it's not about a cultural collection) do: pretentious. When talking about hunger & poverty, being pretentious is probably one of the last ways you want to be heard.

The problem with terms like food insecurity/ unhoused is not that they’re offensive, but they’re not common language. It makes politicians seem remote & weirdly formal to voters. It would be like Michelle Obama saying “When they go low, one goes high”

I understand and I agree in a lot of cases, but "food insecurity" seems pretty widely used. Maybe I'm wrong.

I’ve heard it among ppl working together or interested in non-profits, politics, etc. I’ve never heard it casually among random groupings of friends and family. I don’t think it would offensive at all. It might need to be explained. That explanation isn’t happening in the space of a political ad.

Unlike most of this 3rd way list, Latinx has data. A poll of Latinos showed 2-3% identified as Latinx. If an average Latino ad consumer is looking around the room thinking, “Is there a Latinx in the room now?” then the ad is failing. Failing to communicate is easy. Offending ppl is harder.

Yes. It sounds like elitist BS. Also, it sounds like an undefined expansion of hunger. As in are they going hungry or are they just worrying about being hungry? Both are problematic, but for many people it sounds like moving the goal posts and makes them suspicious.
