I have vague memories of people from his hometown trying to warn us that he was not the leftist populist everyone thought he was. Unfortunately, their voices were never amplified.

Yes to this. I remember some Black PA residents being like "Uh, maybe we shouldn't vote for the guy who pulled a shotgun on an innocent Black man".
