It's worth remembering, as a secondary thing, that the planter class was also an enemy to everyone outside their class. The book "Bitterly Divided" describes how they forced secession through legislatures by violence and let people go hungry while they raised cash crops.
The governing class in Louisiana was torn about secession. (I should note they were not so torn about slavery itself.)
