I think many people honestly believe what they're saying, and that they intentionally shut their eyes to the truth (which is perhaps just as morally rephrensible as lying). Spoken from experience growing up as part of the Jewish community.

The vehemence/passion of the lying is hard to stomach as genuine belief, IMO. (I’m thinking of Gilibrand’s rant, for example.) But I could be wrong.
