Wouldn't matter. Our greater error was not hanging every traitor who wore Confederate gray or every Southern politician who committed treason upon the US.

Yes I agree up to a point. I would say Officers and Politicians should have paid a price. The Rebel soldiers for the most part were just farmers and workers convinced they were fighting for a just cause. Basically the wealthy told them a bunch of bullshit to fight to keep free labor.
