I'd like to see these farmers do the work they say Americans aren't fit enough to do. I dont disagree with them, but, you know, lead by example and such. Show em' how its done there, Clyde.

Where I grew up, in rural Lincolnshire in the UK, there was a very firm division between "farmers" and those who actually worked the land.

That's fair. I grew up in rural Illinois, where farmers didn't use field labor, probably because the crops didn't call for it. They worked their own acreage with machines, and all had multiple daughters around my age who could also work those machines. Man, I miss farming with the neighbors.

Much of the land round me was divided into 500+ acre farms, often heading to 1000+. I think I can count on one finger that number of small/tenant farmers I knew.

We had labour agencies (gangmasters) who had permanent recruitment offices in Poland, the Balts, Hungary and Czech Republic.

Whereabouts in Lincs? I grew up in Skeg then near Spilsby in the ‘70, the first paid work I ever did was a few days on a potato harvester on a friend’s uncle’s farm.

That was more in-the-family, but a couple of years later in money troubles my mother (whose usual occasional gig was substitute-teaching Latin or Greek) & I answered a call for pea-pickers on a local farm: that was piece-work, and we did not do well.

JFC! They proved this in the '60s. Republicans have NO LONG TERM MEMORY, and they IGNORE HISTORY! Republicans think ALL HISTORY IS A LIE. Now those MFing MORONS are indentured to a dictator who will ignore THEM TOO!

When you grow up on a farm you have no problem doing the work. The mind and body is already in condition to do the labor. Problem is, the farmer is only one person and needs whole crews that are in shape to do it.
