This Memorial Day Weekend, the goal is to grill without eating metal spikes.

A giant hamburger with many fixings. There is a wire grill brush sticking out of the burger. The text reads: Keep sharp objects out of your food. Clean your grill with a nylon brush or ball of aluminum foil.

RE the folks pointing out the other ways to clean a grill: There are indeed many ways to clean a grill and any way that does not result in someone getting stabbed in the throat or sent the ER could likely work just fine.

Right? I don't want that stuff in my food either. Back in the 70's I was concerned with my mom serving us baked potatoes in foil that had been pierced after being wrapped. I studiously removed those bits & a good bit surrounding it. My mom rolled her eyes at me. Also, don't grill anyway. Vegetarian.

This is why I like wood pellet grills. No propane. No charcoal, just pellets that last for several rounds of cooking as long as the hopper’s a decent size. Temp self-regulates, machine self-ignites, etc. the cleanup is the only difficult part, but the wood smoke flavor is 🤤

Where's the fun in that? FYI, after using a metal brush, get a pair of tongs, some paper towel & oil. Place the folded paper towel in the tongs & soak the paper towel with the oil & clean the grill again. This coats the surface with oil, making the meat stick less & cleans up any metal bits.

Use loosely balled up aluminum foil on a hot grill (with tongs, obv) or get a wooden grill spatula and wear it in on a hot grill. Don't forget to season your hot surfaces so that foods stick less often.

Cheapest small bottle of vegetable oil you can find and a clean brush (or new if it's been used on non-foodstuffs like paint) then apply liberally. I give it ~30-60m to soak in then fire up the grill to moderate temps, apply a 2nd coat if you're not in a hurry, otherwise, cool & repeat when sticky.

Thanks for sharing the article. It reminded me that when I was 10, on the late 1950s, I was trying to make cookies on my own in our gas oven while my mom was still asleep. I forgot to take out the pot holders we stored in the broiler section, and a fire started! Yikes! I woke my mom, who put it… ⬇️

Putting asbestos in everything was perfectly normal back then. One house I lived in had asbestos floor tiles. Fortunately I didn't decide to remodel!

Many small heaters in old houses contained asbestos. Tiles for fireplace surrounds also contained asbestos. Honestly, many buildings built in the early- to late-middle twentieth century are likely full of asbestos and renovation requires special knowledge and handling to remediate.

That’s really interesting (and not entirely unsurprising). My father was a boilermaker (think industrial welder, in part) and many of his work clothes likely contained asbestos because of the necessity of fire retardant properties for workers in that environment.

Onion works cause it's dense & acidic. When I worked with a flat top griddle way back,we used lemon juice because nothing short of actual aggressive de-greasing chemicals came close to how good it worked overall and without the dangerous fumes. Could probably soak a towel in lemon juice for a grill

Jerry Actually @jerryactually.bsky.social

When I worked at a burger joint, we'd clean the grill with water. The water on the hot grill would boil, and de-glaze the grill surface. Finish that up with scotch bright pad, and it was good to go.

may 23, 2025, 5:01 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
Zozo @zozorobo.bsky.social

We'd do the same in a rush if necessary, end of shift was always lemon juice, it went quite a bit farther. I did work at a higher end private restaurant though, so things were a bit more picky than most fast food places I've had experience in.

may 23, 2025, 5:03 pm • 2 0 • view

Jerry Actually @jerryactually.bsky.social

The acidic liquid in the onion, combined with the hot grill grate, creates steam and helps remove built up material on the grill grate. I think the relative weight/density of an average onion is of some benefit as well.

may 23, 2025, 4:06 pm • 3 0 • view
avatar
NullProse @nullprose.bsky.social

onions have an array of chemical compounds including sulfuric acid. The acids help break down the organic buildup on the grill. So while a brush is using mechanical abrasion to knock off the organic buildup, an onion will chemically break down bonds, including the bonds to your grill

NullProse @nullprose.bsky.social

My buddy is in remediation and is a chemical whiz with cleaning. I followed up with him and he said the onion is really cool because there are multiple chemical reactions happening from the acid and other compounds.

may 23, 2025, 5:48 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
NullProse @nullprose.bsky.social

The water in the onion is turned to steam from the heat which helps it permeate the char and increases the rate of reactivity. The acids meanwhile are dissolving some of the simple organic bonds The steam and acids actually cause hydrolysis which breaks down more complex oranges bonds

Imagine thinking this is an issue. Maybe buy a normal wire brush that doesn’t shed, and then look at your grill to make sure it’s clean rather than covered in shrapnel after cleaning? Instead you want to melt nylon on the grill? This really is Trump’s dumb America

An onion cut in half cleans a grill. Turn the grill on, cut the onion in half stick a fork in the root and stem ends and rub it where it needs to be cleaned. Works like a charm.

I heard about this, this is real. ----------------------------------------- A metal brush can leave broken-off bristles. Bristles half an inch long can get on your burger/hot dog/chicken/steak/etc. You swallow one or more bristles. Now they're poking holes in your intestines, etc. This is bad.
