I believe you have written the book that I've been hoping somebody would write. I feel that a big reason we have not reformed our economy and tax system, is that too many people believe these multi-billionaires must be kept free to lead us into the high-tech future, including space colonization.

Impossible to pick a favorite quote but i think this guy speaks for everyone you interviewed. “I don’t have a simple recipe for creating my number,” he says. “I guess it would ultimately be like, live my experiences or something through my whole life.”
Fantastic book. Its like reading one long Isaac Chotiner interview. Every page seems to have at least one quote that I reread while muttering 'wow, they actually said that out loud'.

Have you heard of the delightful short story IRTNOG? It's from the mid 1930s, written by E. B. White, about a machine that distills the news into a short summary. It echos a point you make regarding LLMs rather nicely - with a foreshadowing of Douglas Addams. Love your book!

I am roughly halfway through this book. I hate that TESCREAL, longtermism, Singularity-ism, etc exists and that I have to know about it, but I DO need to know about it, so I am grateful that this book exists.
On chapter five now. This book is giving a frame of reference to understand all of this stuff, which is great, but it hasn't been great for my mental health 🫠

Just finished the book. I agree that billionaires shouldn't be a thing. By an odd coincidence, when I tell people this, the thought experiment I use to explain it is "What if you had $500 million dollars? What couldn't you do at that point?" Other than buy an entire state legislature, etc.

I just read your fascinating interview with Arstechnica. I have been extremely bothered for years how the public has been seduced by technology and Silicon Valley without even considering the damage it has done as is doing. The ISS is a space example. It is a PR tool. AI scares me to death!

How did you research this book? I'm halfway through the audio book and have no idea how you stood in the same room listening to supposedly educated people espouse these ideas without slowly backing towards the nearest exit while trying not to break eye contact?
Mostly did it by smiling and nodding while quietly freaking out, and then calling friends afterwards to tell them GUESS WHAT THIS PERSON SAID TO ME TODAY

Just filled out a request for purchase form at my local public library. Even if you choose to purchase a copy, I recommend everyone do the same. This is how you get important books into your neighbor’s hands, as well as informing the library system that his is information people want.
Just read the @nytimes.com review and your book should be mandatory reading by any decision-maker. You apply science reasoning to something most of us have figured out without a degree in astrophysics. Nobody wants to live on Mars! So why are we spending so much money trying to get there?
I’m now most of the way through this excellent book and can’t stop yelling “but, they all hate (almost all) people! They hate art!”. They’re just endlessly thirsty (for love, connection, adoration, etc). Anything but therapy or even introspection… Congrats on the book. So important. So well done.
