The meme is incorrect anyway. Read the Federalist Papers. The founders were 100% convinced of the potential for the stupidity of the electorate. That's why they incorporated checks & balances. Just not enough of them. What they didn't anticipate: Congress ceding its authority wholesale to the exec.

I think that since Washington, the voters have shown they don't care if a man is a rapist. (He kept a black girl/woman "slave" in his basement her whole life in order to sexually abuse her. This was widely known.)

It's also the main reason they did the Electoral College. Their idea was that you'd vote for the electors, not the POTUS. You'd elect someone you know and trust to go to DC and choose the President. It was a controversy when presidential candidates names went on ballots.
