I like this approach.
Thanks. That makes my heart light.
My tenement has neither a wine cellar nor the shelves for a book collection. I read through the library like the other poors.
This is exactly what I need to get my wife to understand, books are like wine!
Exactly
Yes. Absolutely.
Absolutely. Read the wrong book at the wrong time and you’re in danger of not enjoying it.
He’s no Superman.
I love this
Spot on , Thx . . . Book Cellar . . .
LOL, I am def a bookaholic.
Same. Not just physical books. Also ebooks and audiobooks.
No, it must be bound. Obsessive about buying more than anyone could read in a lifetime.
That's been my lifetime approach to my books. I have a lot in my larder.
Don't collect books, read them. Read them now so your bookcase becomes a 'read and treasured' pile of books. Unlike wine, the words are still in the books after you've digested them all. Unread books have potential which decreases in their value to affect you as the years you have left shorten.
Having taken a small crumb of comfort from the OP about the untouched pile of books I have acquired over the past 25 years, that thought has cheered me right up!
But books can be passed on to future generations. Have you noticed how novels have changed over time. More double spacing. Pick up a paperback from the 50’s or 60’s and the print is tightly ‘packed’. Library book sales are a treasure trove of old history books and biographies ❤️
Piffle. Do both. Support authors and build an awesome library. I've read 268 fiction books this year and my fiction library is ~4,300 books, of which I've read ~2,500. I don't keep track of the nonfiction books, they are for studying, not reading, and that is an ongoing process.
‘I can’t drink this wine, it’s far too valuable.’ ‘Then why not sell it?’ ‘I couldn’t do that! It means too much to me’
Please don’t encourage my tsundoku
Love that!!!❤️❤️❤️
I used to buy one book at a time, just before or right after I finished the one I was currently reading. Now it's more like grocery shopping. This looks good, and I'll take this one for later, and oh, I'm all out of this author.
No please, come into my book cellar it’s completely safe, ignore the hole in the wall and the loose bricks
YEEEESSSS finally a justification for my impulses!
Yes! You just made my day!
Wonderful way to think. Enjoy your Sunday.
This is how I feel about maps. - Andrew.
Sometimes you open one and think what the hell is this crap about? As a 13 yo I won a book prize at school. I never could get my teeth into it. When I was 50 I decided to try again. I needed some Greek history behind me first, after which I was able to read that book & enjoy it.
Ooh - I like this!
😍
Van Donkersgoad is one hell of a name though.
Type of name id give my red dead redemption character
Has to be made up surely
Oh my god I am officially stealing this guy's name to use for a family of blackmarket merchants in D&D
This is so true. I’m reading a book right now I’ve had for years. Almost passed it along. Then decided to read it. Glad I did.
Also - buy ‘em while you still can.
Love this!

Great analogy , I have just that kind of library of books.
Finding good books to read is like finding a prince in the pond, you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince.
📖♥️
That would be a lovely sentiment if I weren't constantly buying more.
While clearing bookcases, have discovered many had no time to read when purchased, shall read soon (now that I know I have them!) Others read long ago, made no sense then, perfectly good sense when read recently. Analogy to wine cellar is appropriate
Well put! My cellar overflows!
And like a fine wine, there are a few favorites that are visited when the soul call for them
Indeed.
You know this makes me feel less crap. I have at least 20 books I've not started yet I've had for years!
Thank you
If this is true I have a VERY extensive wine cellar - if we wish to stretch the metaphor, my books are also covered in dust 😁
bigthink.com/neuropsych/d...
Procrastination justified
I like to read a book a couple of times then donate it.
As with wine it only applies to some books.
Books are functional decor.
That would be me. Great meme!
And yet I keep buying them. Hope I don’t die or go blind before the opportunity strikes for me to pick one up and crack the spine.
Books go off rapidly… especailly non-fiction
I agree, currently have a back log of four, in my defense am coming to the end of 800 pages of "The History Of Western Philosophy", with more weighty tomes a coming.
"Bookshelf" being my @libro.fm account, here.
I just need the wine cellar.
Will the books get better with time?
💯 Thank you!
Interesting
I use the public library. I possess EVERY book. just down my street in a large building. climate controlled and indexed. quit buying shit! books included. #CapitalismKills
But books don't cork, usually.
Usually. Though my Sandman collection has definitely gotten dank as of recently.
Love this!
For me, the right time to read a book is when I'm not sleeping or working ; ) #WritingCommunity, #writers, #authorsOfBluesky: use up to 8.3 characters in a single post thanks to #ALText that makes text audible for the visually impaired. #inclusion is fairness, and we are #strongertogether.
Well yes, when you plan when you are going to read!!!!
... which may never come, or come too late, as in, certain books are really to be read at certain ages, and if you miss it and read it later, it won't connect.
Yes! This is perfect.
I have many books in my library which I've yet to read. I am reading 3 different books at the moment. I have 1 in my car, 1 in my husband's car and 1 in his truck. I read from one whenever he has to go into a store and I do not feel like accompanying him.
I pass almost all of my books on after they’ve been read; a book on a shelf isn’t serving its purpose. There are exceptions to this of course but , for the most part, I enjoy sharing the experience with others.
Applying this theory to my yarn stash as well.
Never thought of it that way before
Luke of the good donk said that?
I read three books and vomited last night
So true! Never thought of it that way. Man, my “wine cellar” (book stack to read) is bountiful! 📚📕📗📘📚
On a personal note, things have been really hard for me and my siblings here in The Gambia 🇬🇲. We’ve been without food and medicine, and my sister’s health is in danger. If anyone is able to help or share, please see my campaign: chuffed.org/project/1364...
Beautifully stated
My mother had huge penguin book collection…..used to browse..think…read that one day. One day visited ..the books were gone! She sold the collection. Mother I was going to read some of them. Mum replied well you’ll just have to get your own 👍🏼
I pulled out a book by Frank O'Connor the other day. Sadly, it was corked
I have never read a book twice. Why? Don't buy books, don't keep books, took all that I had to a bookseller. No more paper dust, no more space taken up. As I've gotten older I fall asleep when I read. So. Meh.
Thank you. I bought some books on grief when my mom passed, several years ago and have yet to read them. I guess the time just isn’t right, yet.
I tell my wife often if we ever go dark and end up using stone tools again at least we’ll have a lot of books to read, it’s also her excuse to buy or bring home more books when she sees them. 😂🤦♂️
Agreed. Sometimes I have a book for years before I read it.
Always
And meanwhile, they, like you, are maturing.
My books are a stress meter. I bought them because I want to read them now, now, now. And I can’t read three books at once.
It's worth a try. Literature has ghostly life, so Rereading and reading simultaneously can be incredibly insightful.
Exactly - tks for sharing.
@bibliotario.bsky.social
Exactly.
Well gee, I needed to see this today. The guilt fades and my excitement grows.
THIS. Thank you for giving me a very eloquent & cultured justification for my procrastination!!!!
📌
Thanks for the quote. It will serve me well in fending off the criticism that I hoard books.
That'd be good, if you knew what was in them.
Yes! Yes! Yes!!! 📚 Piles to read, piles to read again, piles I’m emotionally attached to, piles I’m not sure about, new author pile, and…so…the piles keep piling up!! 📚💛 and don’t forget the double purchases…if I love the digital, I’ll buy the hard copy…😬 📚 ❤️ (love walls of bookcases)
And! The books you got because they called to you, and will one day be a lovely housewarming or holiday gift to a friend who has you over for a party!
Deep, I read because I have time. VOTE.
Of course, books and wine work on the brain in rather opposite ways...
Brilliant!
I began giving books away to friends after reading them. Once read, the friend would pass it to another. Vaya con Dios
I have more unread books on my kindle than on my shelves. The Complete Works of Jules Verne alone accounts for about 70.
I will scream the truth into the void for as long as I still have a voice I am innocent
I will scream the truth into the void for as long as I still have a voice I am innocent
Ugh. So good. The validation I needed as I order another bookshelf to collect further unread vintages~ 🍷
Unlike books, my wine never seems to look down on me in an accusatory manner.
Excellent year on this book😁💕
I'll say it again: reading books and acquiring books are two different hobbies.

Damn right!
Thank you for sharing this Takes some pressure off!!!!
😁
Love this 💙
Exactly!
This is me🤭
Yes! I hate to admit it, but I have a few books I've yet to read and others I've read so many times I can quote them! Love reading. Gotta get to those unread ones soon.
🩶
I'm running out of cellar space 😅
📍
There are books you read to... Alter your mood Refine your mood or thoughts Refresh your memory Gain Clairity on a topic Figure out how to do something Gain Understanding of something or someone Spark new idea's There are many reasons to collect old books. Using them as a Resource is wisdom.
I have a stack of them waiting for me to friendly. 📚
Thats the reason i dont read some of them dont fell like the right time i feel scared of not apreciate them right
What does that make my game backlog? "We're going to need a bigger cellar..."
And, unlike wine that can be consumed only once, books are made to be savored over and over again. Some get better as you age.
Oh i like this one ! thanks for sharing .
& when you retire you'll have time read a lot of them if not all...
I remember that. Twilight Zone, right? He gets his wish, but his glasses get broken?
Plot twist: there is one book he can read without his glasses, titled "Learn to Read Braille."
Yes
Am I weird for never having a to be read pile? I don't buy a book unless I'm going to start reading it as soon as I get home.
Until they become clutter!
Book good when they mend parts haaaa
That sounds about right.
You phone up yer work saying yer sick. You lock yerself in the cellar. You get out yer glasses. And you start consuming
Why yes, I *should* make sure my book cellar is fully stocked.
What if I consider my wine cellar to be a to be drank pile?
Like in Fahrenheit 451 We're also protecting physical copies of 📚 from the 🌮, GOP, heritage foundation, project 2025 Regime
THANK YOU!
LOVE THIS.
I can never read about unread books without remembering this lazy man’s cheat to appear literate and intellectuall! sidewaysstation.com/2018/04/10/f...
Great 😃
OMG, thank you for this.
There is a Japanese word for this. For books bought that sit on a stack(s)
LOL, my "Complete Works of Dostoevsky" and my upteen-volume unabridged Gibbons' "Declin and Fall of the Roman Empire" must be a pretty fine vintage by now ;)
That's a really good point! Also whether it's the "to read pile" or a yet untasted vintage, there's to little of it around here: I NEED MORE BOOKS!
Great quote. Indeed, there are books I've enjoyed reading for the first time after sitting on my shelves for a long while.
Dreamy 😊
I'm a voracious reader. I was in a coma for 4 months 2016 & when I woke the most devastation thing to me was my inability to read actual.books. The lines merged. I discovered Kindle. With the dark mode & bright letters I could read again. I got rid of over 2,000 books & have read 8 books this week
exactly.
As an avid reader and collector of books, I agree with this statement. ❤️
This describes my Kindle perfectly.
💙
So true.
I love it! This frees me of the guilt of not reading books fast enough.
The time is NOW
I have several books I have read x5.The books are referenced often for their value on truth of facts.I read to improve,I read to find the truth,I read to create the narrative,I read to understand the revolution, I read to create the narrative to fashion the revolution,I read to create the revolution
That’s how I do it. This just sounds better.
Books have some value for the contents within. And while both books and wine are potential investments, the sad reality is that most of both are displayed and stored to provide a fraudulent external persona. This is clear with the snobbery accompanying digital texts.
Wise
So true.
horrible take. my book case is full i need a new one next time i get more books n i only have 2 i haven’t read. i finished 8 books this summer - are people just not reading the books they buy? it’s just decoration or some form of intellectual validation for u?
It’s a bad take because you’re a fast reader?
i’d be a fast reader if i read 8 books in a week. 8 books in 3 months is really not too quick - that’s a book every week n a half. that’s like an hour a day
Beautifully expressed. I read 'The Prophet' 40 years after it was given to me by my brother.
I love this 🥰
Oh I love this!!
I agree with that 😁
Well said!
