I love to read, but ADHD can make it complicated at times, with periods of very low focus. One solution I’ve been trying is to promise myself to read every day, but only 10 pages. Starting is the hardest part, so even on bad days, those 10 pages often turn into more. 1/2

I feel you. As usual with adhd it‘s the. STARTING. that‘s the hardest part….

If I skip one day, it can easily turn into two or three, and suddenly I’m in a reading slump. This approach can be applied to anything, even workouts. Just do it every day, even if it’s only for two minutes. 2/3

The key is consistency. If you only manage the bare minimum, that’s still a win. It's a success, and there’s always tomorrow to do more. 3/3

PS: Absolutely, no matter how large or how small--- celebrate those victories, Jeremy! (I was a teacher, & throughout my career, knew a number of children who had ADHD. It's tough, for sure. But I love how you're choosing to handle it. I hope you're patient w. yourself, too, as well as consistent.)

Hi! I hadn't seen you on here for quite a long time & was wondering where you & that gorgeous baking went. Then, just now, you popped up here, talking about your ADHD! I have a niece who has that, as well as her daughter. Not always easy to manage, but both have done well. You got this! #Consistency

That's good advice! BJ Fogg, behavioural scientist at Stanford University has done extensive research on this subject and has published a brilliant book, 'Tiny Habits'

unholy wombo combo of adhd, dyslexia, AND hyperlexia (yes, you can have both, and it is fucking hilarious) checking in. kindle. beeeg text. beeeg spaces. make it so that you only have 1-3 sentences per page. it makes you be a little more mindful about accidentally skipping paragraphs.

I think sometimes you have to give yourself permission. That it is a worthwhile way to spend time. Well - I do anyway. 🙂

I read today that there's more people taking ADHD meds than ever, and more diagnosis in adults.

Does getting up, stretching, slip into my slippers, run to the bathroom, count as a workout 🤔

This sounds like the "morning pages", which a lot of writers do: they write anything for a couple of pages each day, then discard them and move on..

The main thing is you love to read so don't stress over the days that prove difficult.

Monotropism and polytropism are two recent terms that can help explain this sort of thing to other people.

I need to try this. I did the Goodreads challenge in 2023 for 100 books and since then, it's like my brain just goes "NO!" When reading

I have two speeds. Read the same page 17 times or finish the whole book in one sitting. There is no in-between.

As someone who also suffers from ADHD, I realized a while back that I hadn't lost my love of reading but that it merely changed in format. I regularly read on Royal Road and Reddit [through the HFY community stories, mind you. I keep out of the deep ends, thankfully.]

Audiobooks are great as well. Some people sneer at them, but if I'm in a car going from A to B all day it's a great way to engage my brain as I go.

Also - people who listen to podcasts and audiobooks on 1.5x speed are psychopaths, not to be trusted. 🤣
