Is the bit about them wearing "castoff clothing" some sort of joke? I was unable to find any reference. I suppose they might steal castoff clothing to line a den or something?
A few weeks ago my wife and I pressed the request button for a walk signal on a busy street that cuts through our neighborhood. As soon as the audible signal started, a coyote emerged from cover and trotted across right alongside us.

I approached a building's basement stairs and a cat-sized animal crawled out to meet me. I assumed it was a cat until I got closer. I named him King Rat. He waddled to the crossing with me and waited patiently to cross when the light changed. He took the path one way and I the other.
Just another typical NYC wildlife encounter. 😉
